Meet Ana
Friendship Bridge client since 2019; part of Handmade by Friendship Bridge® since 2025
Ana makes her home in Santa Cruz in the department of Quiché. Separated from her husband, she has two young adult sons and a young adult daughter. Long ago, she trained to be a nurse, but is not currently practicing.
The Artisan’s History
Ana learned to sew from her parents, who made a living creating Guatemalan blouses and aprons in the traditional style of the Quiché region. Starting at age 8, she observed her parents’ techniques. By the time she was 12 or 13, she had already learned to make clothing on her own. To this day, her favorite items to make are the traditional blouses of Quiché. She gathers inspiration for her work from the original huipiles of the region.
The Friendship Bridge Impact
With her first loan from Friendship Bridge, Ana bought a sewing machine that she needed for specific techniques. With later loans, she began to improve the construction of her house and also invested in her children's education. She’s learned new techniques that she can use in her businesses, and appreciates the monthly Non-Formal Education sessions she receives from her Credit & Education Facilitator. Ana has also taken advantage of mental health services provided through Friendship Bridge.
Goals
Ana hopes to someday own a car and drive it herself. She also wants to continue improving her home and obtain her Visa. In her business, she wants to help other individuals who work with her.
