Handbeaded in deep earth tones, this coin purse with a zipper closure features a Mayan symbol that represents the Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala. The quetzal is often considered a symbol of freedom for the Mayan people because of a belief that the Quetzal would let itself die of hunger, rather than living in captivity. This relates to the Spanish invasion of Guatemala 500 years ago, when the indigenous Maya were expected to adopt the way of life of the Spaniards.
